Apple is on a break this week, so it's like to be a very slow week for news. We'll have plenty of reviews and feature articles for you, though, and of course we'll scour what little news does appear in order to bring you the News Update:

  • Apple's AI team publishes its first public paper regarding the subject of Generative Adversarial Networks to improve synthetic training images
  • Apple may not have "lucky bags" at Japanese Apple Stores this year, but they will have sales of some sort on January 2nd, 2017
  • The Nokia vs. Apple war escalates, with connected-self manufacturer Withings becoming an unwilling victim

Steve discovers that the "Brazilian Death Flu" is actually a mild case of pneumonia, so hopefully he'll be on the mend now that he's on medication. In this last work day before the Christmas holiday (and Hanukkah begins on the 25th as well), we have just a few items to tide you over until Monday:

  • Ever wondered what that Israeli smartphone hacking tool can do other than unlock a locked iPhone? ZDNet got some leaked documents, and it's pretty impressive software...with limitations
  • Some lucky folks in the UK are receiving the LG UltraFine 5K Displays just in time for the holidays
  • A questionable rumor says that low yields of a chip that may or may not be used in the upcoming new iPads might delay a March product rollout

  • AT&T rolls out the Cell Protect spam blocking service...although it doesn't work everywhere or on every iPhone
  • Apple has apparently been asked to unlock an iPhone 4s used by the assassin who killed the Russian ambassador to Turkey
  • Now you can be the life of the party with your iPhone 7 or 7 Plus and djay Pro for iPhone!
  • Missiles are flying back and forth between Finland and Cupertino as the patent war between Nokia and Apple escalates

  • Kim Dotcom says that Apple will buy a Hollywood Studio in 2017
  • The 2017 Honda CR-V was launched today, with support for Apple CarPlay
  • Super Mario Run has been downloaded 40 million times in the first 4 days, a new record for the App Store
  • There's an update available for models of the AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi Router
  • Apple's now selling refurbed Apple Watches online

Slow news Tuesday™ -- it's a thing today, and we have a short podcast for you. Among the stories:

  • Apple starts taking orders for the LG UltraFine 5K monitor
  • The 4th-generation Apple TV gets a quiet update adding two new US networks to live tune-in and some universal search options for Norway and Sweden
  • Bloomberg says that the iMac might be getting an update in early 2017, possibly with USB-C ports and new AMD graphics cards

Steve apparently picked up the flu on his trip to South America and is feeling rather under the weather, but he managed to make it all the way through today's podcast recording without having a coughing fit. The news?

  • Apple sets up a mini-site to market Apple Watch to corporate wellness groups
  • There's now proof from an Australian runner that even hot, sweaty and hilly 10K runs and sprints in wind are no match for AirPods, which stayed in his ears the entire time
  • Facebook Messenger for iOS, Android and Web is updated with a new video chat feature
  • Nintendo's big app -- Super Mario Run -- is getting downloaded a lot but isn't putting a lot of coins into the company's coffers

It's Friday, and if you haven't checked out the latest Apple news before you head to the theatre to see Star Wars: Rogue One, we have a short update that you can listen to while standing in line at the theater:

  • Apple CEO Tim Cook and President-elect Donald Trump agree on one topic - repatriation of corporate profits held overseas at a reduced tax rate
