As we bid a fond farewell to the month of September, there are some interesting, fun and even expensive stories from the world of Apple:

  • A California bill signed yesterday opens the door to self-driving cars without backup drivers or steering wheels
  • Apple wants to yank the second most popular sticker app in the Messages App Store...for looking too much like Messages
  • We have some ideas for you if you just happen to have $500,000 to blow...
Sep 29, 2016

We want to thank our listeners -- old and new -- for pushing our podcast numbers to a new record in the month of September. Since July, our number of monthly listens has risen 261%, all thanks to you. In other Apple news today:

  • Some BMW owners and Verizon customers are having issues with the new iPhone 7s
  • The FCC voted to make major improvements to the Wireless Emergency Alerts system, so you'll now get photos of wanted suspects and links to more info
  • The FCC delayed a vote on allowing consumers to bypass cable and satellite company set top boxes by using devices like Apple TVs to watch their favorite shows
  • A new Kickstarter wants you to support an unsightly dongle for your iPhone 7 so you can listen to your old headphones and charge the phone at the same time. Our solution? Just go wireless.

In today's Apple news -- word of a hacker meeting at Apple headquarters today, a rumor that the Lightning port may be the next iPhone port to disappear, and an interesting piece of information on how Apple logs each of your Messages...although it can't read them.

  • Apple invites a dozen or so top hackers to Apple HQ to get them up to speed on a new bug bounty program that could pay up to $200,000 for each vulnerability found
  • A patent filing today shows a new "optical port" that could be used on future iPhones, making a port-less iPhone a reality
  • Apple logs the IP address, date and time of every text message you send, and can provide that information to law enforcement officers upon request.

Lots of nice Apple-related stories today on this beautiful Tuesday:

  • FileMaker announces FileMaker Cloud, which -- as you'd surmise -- is a cloud solution for FileMaker databases
  • Fujitsu is warning users of any of its ScanSnap scanners to NOT use them with macOS Sierra. We tell you why.
  • The DarkSky iPhone app now has a website companion to increase its audience and usability
  • YouTube Go will help you watch more videos on the road without going over your data cap...but only in India for now

Ahhh, back from a nice weekend in the Colorado Rockies, Steve has three fascinating little stories from the world of tech and Apple that you just have to hear!

  • In the near future, you won't need to set up your own Plex media server to use the service, as the company is moving Plex to the cloud
  • Last week, Salesforce.com was being bandied about as a possible suitor for Twitter. Today's possible hot date for Twitter? Think Mickey Mouse...
  • A group of developers got a bit silly at a company retreat and decided to test the water resistance of the iPhone 7 Smart Battery Case. Find out how it did!
Sep 22, 2016

It's the first day of Autumn, and it's also the last AWT News Update of the week -- be sure to join us again on Monday afternoon. Steve had to do this podcast unscripted, so we have just a few Apple-related stories today:

  • A 19-year-old hacker claims to have jailbroken an iPhone 7 in less than 24 hours; we're wondering if he'll release the jailbreak to the public or get a bounty from Apple for revealing the vulnerability he used;
  • ABC News is added to Live TV on the 4th-generation Apple TV;
  • Apple opens another Apple retail outlet, this one is the sixth in Hong Kong
Sep 21, 2016

Today we take a look at a nifty new high-tech jacket from SCOTTeVEST, but most of the 6 minutes or so of this podcast is spent talking about what Steve thinks are some of the marquee features of macOS Sierra. If you haven't yet installed the latest version of the Mac operating system, you're in for a very nice surprise!

Sep 20, 2016

It's macOS Sierra day, so Apple's laptops and desktops are in the spotlight for once. Doing a bunch of upgrade work on a few Macs tied up a lot of Steve's day, but he managed to get some Sierra news for you:

  • Top features of macOS Sierra
  • Use Twitter? Get the newly-updated Tweetbot app for Mac
  • Hints on how to use Sierra's Picture-in-Picture video capability on one site that doesn't support the new feature -- YouTube!
Sep 19, 2016

Steve's iPhone 7 Plus finally arrived today -- don't ask -- so he's been playing with it in advance of a full review. That means that today's podcast is a bit shorter than usual!

  • We overview some rare bugs that are hitting some new iPhones
  • macOS Sierra will be here tomorrow. Are you ready?
  • Google releases Google Trips for iOS, great for business or personal travel
Sep 16, 2016

Steve's not happy that his iPhone 7 Plus didn't arrive on its scheduled date, but at least he didn't get caught up in the typhoon that delayed shipment. We have some good news stories for you, though:

  • Tests of the new Beats Solo3 Wireless headphones are showing that the Apple W1 chip inside the headphones can provide ranges of up to 800 feet away from an iPhone
  • Did you know that you can now ask Siri to take a picture?
  • We tell you how to reboot an iPhone 7 (hint - the old method doesn't work anymore)
  • Apple will pay a patent licensing firm at least $22.1 million for infringing on a cellular networking patent
Sep 15, 2016

'Twas the day before iPhone 7 and all through the house, everybody was waiting for the UPS guy, that louse... Sorry, but I couldn't think of anything that rhymed. Anyway, we have a lot of fun little stories for you on the podcast today:

  • Apple ships a second Golden Master of macOS Sierra
  • A look at a 2014 filing shows that a company that's creating long-distance wireless charging technology expects to get "Apple certification"
  • Planning on watching the NFL Thursday Night Football game on Twitter tonight?
  • IK Multimedia comes out with an audio interface that just happens to work with Lightning ports
Sep 14, 2016

A short update today after the rush of craziness from the iOS 10 upgrade yesterday.

  • Swatch wins; iWatch will not be an Apple trademark, at least in the UK
  • Apple Pay will be coming to Apple World Today soon
  • A new keyboard from Logitech lets you prop up and type to both an iPhone and iPad Pro
  • A shaky source says that Apple might manufacture as many as 100 million iPhone 7/7 Plus devices by year-end
Sep 13, 2016

Sorry about the lack of a podcast yesterday, but sometimes foreign countries can interfere... Here's what we have for you on this BIG day in Apple history:

  • Today's iOS 10 update was marred with some issues that appear to have been fixed now, but not before a lot of iPhone users "bricked" their devices
  • Three Apple retail outlets will be reopening on Friday, coinciding with the launch of the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
  • tvOS didn't get one of its key features during today's update
  • iWork's collaboration features are now live on iOS 10
  • Swift Playgrounds is available, and not just for kids!
Sep 9, 2016

We're heading into the weekend with iPhone 7s and Apple Watches (Series 2) pre-ordered, so what else is happening? Give us 4 minutes and we'll give you some news:

  • Regardless of what brainless pundits are saying about the "lack of an audio port", the iPhone 7 appears to be an instant success
  • First the FAA recommends not taking Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones on airplanes. Today, the US CPSC issued an even stronger warning to the public at large -- "turn them off"
  • Tim Cook allegedly emails a concerned Mac fan to reassure him that upgrades are coming
  • Would you believe that an iPhone 7 Plus is actually faster than a 12-inch MacBook? It's true!
Sep 8, 2016

While there's not as much exciting news as in yesterday's marathon podcast, today's can be listened to in its entirety in just a little over four minutes. Here's what we have for you today:

  • We take exception to a very clickbaitish article about AirPods on another website
  • GeekBench 4 results show the iPhone 7 Plus to be a fast smartphone, even faster than the iPad Pro!
  • Some features "advertised" at WWDC for macOS Sierra and iOS 10 don't appear to have made it to the first non-beta versions of the operating systems that shipped to developers and public beta testers today
  • The Taptic Engine in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will start getting used more often for feedback now that Apple has announced that an API will be available for developers
Sep 7, 2016

Did you miss out on today's Apple event, and don't have time to watch the entire video? Apple World Today's Steve Sande provides you with the key items from the keynote in just 23 minutes of unscripted fun! Listen in on this special edition of the AWT News Update for a quick overview of almost everything that Apple announced at the event.

Sep 6, 2016

It's the day before a major Apple announcement, so we're going to fill you in on some fun news on what we'll be doing tomorrow, as well as some "regularly scheduled" Apple news:

  • It appears that the Chinese market is quite uninterested in the new iPhone
  • Apple World Today has a "stupendous, gigantic" roundup of accessories for the new iPhones that will be published tomorrow
  • A bunch of Apple trademark filings unveil some new and interesting names, like "Iris Engine" and "Smart Button"
  • No liveblog on Apple World Today tomorrow; we invite you to watch Apple's livestream of the event and then head to AWT for more information
Sep 2, 2016

Just a reminder -- due to the US Labor Day weekend, the next AWT News Update episode will appear on Tuesday, September 6.

  • Some rather bogus looking "iPhone 7 boxes" from Hungary and Russia show that the devices come with wireless AirPods, but we'll just wait and see. Earlier bogus boxes showed them coming with "EarPods with Lightning Connector".
  • Just in time for the "iPhone 7" announcement, we're starting to hear rumors about the "iPhone 8" or "10th Anniversary iPhone". The big feature? An iris scanner for authentication.
  • Apple's Twitter account may have been finally activated after being set up in 2011, just for the purpose of either live-tweeting or live streaming the event next Wednesday.
Sep 1, 2016

You can tell that there's an Apple event coming soon, because news about the company is pretty nonexistent! We have just two news items for you today, making for a very quick listen:

  • An inadvertently-sent email confirms that new Beats products will be announced at next week's event
  • Apple starts up a new blog showing how third-party app integration with Siri works in iOS 10
