Happy Cinco de Mayo - today's Apple news covers the gamut from Watch-controlled cars to executive compensation, with a little Apple Pay and accessibility thrown in for good measure:

  • Owners of VW automobiles with Car-Net will soon be able to use their Apple Watches to do a great many things with their cars
  • More banks and credit unions have been added to the list of institutions supporting Apple Pay. Have a Simple account? You can now add your debit card to Apple Pay.
  • Apple retail chief Angela Ahrendts was the top-paid US female executive last year
  • Apple's revised streaming service based on Beats Music will most likely be unveiled at WWDC on June 8, despite reported issues with licensing
  • Blogger Molly Watt, who has Usher Syndrome and limited sight and hearing, recently reported on the features she uses to navigate the Apple Watch. Her review can be found here.

  • Research firm determines that about 957,000 Apple Watch pre-orders were made on Friday, April 10 from the US alone
  • CalDigit announces a rugged USB-C portable drive
  • There are some unheralded features in OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite and unannounced feature removals from iOS 8.3
  • At a conference in Chicago this week, a number of healthcare-related Apple Watch apps are being announced and demonstrated

It's the Thursday before pre-orders begin for the Apple Watch, and here's some of the news of the day:

  • Reviews are in for the 12-inch MacBook with Retina Display, and they're overwhelmingly positive, although not everyone thinks getting a first-generation device is a good idea
  • A UK company releases a video in which a brick, keys, coins, and a power drill couldn't scratch the sapphire display that is used on the midrange and high-end Apple Watches
  • Epson releases a sub-$100 all-in-one printer that is AirPrint and Mac compatible
  • Google's Android Wear app for iOS may be out soon... if Apple will allow it on the App Store, that is

  • Researchers at Stanford University have made a prototype aluminum-ion battery that has significant benefits over today's lithium-ion batteries
  • HBO NoOW has gone live on Apple TV, iPad, and iPhone
  • Plan on ordering an Apple Watch or 12-inch MacBook online, as Apple Store employees want to avoid lines at the stores

  • Apple doesn't want felons building its new headquarters in Cupertino
  • Foxconn gives Re/Code a tour of the living quarters for those employees who build all of your favorite Apple products
  • Samsung paid 500 people in China to act as "fans" at a press event for the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge 
  • LG says Apple will release an 8K iMac this year, which of course Apple hasn't announced
